I was skeptical of this movie when it first came out. I was worried that this movie was only going to be good because of the marketing. But it turns out that I actually cried. It was about womanhood and accepting reality as it is. It's about learning to find what you really want. As the Narrator said in the beginning, "𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺’𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘉𝘢𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥. 𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘢𝘮 𝘐 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘣𝘶𝘣𝘣𝘭𝘦?" In Barbieland, everyone was living harmonious and simply with a paucity of experiences and a lack of introspection, with the idea that the Barbies saved every single woman in the Real World. The tradition in Barbieland was to create an adaptation and an over-simplification of the outer and inner world. The passion of E9, Laziness, is defined as "a state of spiritual ignorance, in the laziness of the spirit, denying his inner world and any quest that allows him to awaken his conscience" and "a resistance to any change, which takes place in the absence of motivation, conflict avoidance, and repression of emotions" (La Pereza Psicoespiritual). This acedia can therefore be understood as being created out of a lack of internal love, and therefore seeking love outside oneself while falling asleep to oneself. For passive and self-effacing Barbie, her story started at one special and enjoyable Girls' Night. She was ecstatic, participating in a normal Night as usual. “It is the best day ever. And so is yesterday, and so is tomorrow, and so is the day after tomorrow, and even Wednesday, and everyday from now until forever!” She was stuck in this comfortable tradition with every perfect Barbie... until she had one thought that changed her story forever: "You guys ever think about dying?" Everything dramatically shifted. Everything stopped. Her face fell flat. Noticing how her comment was not socially acceptable based on this group-comfort, she changed her ideas to "I’m just dying to dance!" She continued dancing—but this time in pain. When she went to bed, she said, "Goodnight Barbies. I’m definitely not thinking about death anymore." But yet, she definitely was. The song when she woke up confirmed this: ♪ 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘴𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥? 𝘐𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩? ♪ Social E9 is described as a cheerful, good-natured person who has a passion of doing "what is necessary to pay the toll that allows him to be admitted to the group" (27 characters in search of being). For that reason, Social Nines want to remove the feeling of being different from others. For Barbie, she started the next day feeling embarrassed, which the other Barbies exclaimed that she never feels that way. But the main problem was her feet: her feet were flat! And not only that, but she had cellulite! Barbie was malfunctioning, therefore felt different, and as a Social E9, Barbie set off her adventure to see Weird Barbie. After telling Weird Barbie that she has had thoughts of death, Weird Barbie said, “If you want to be stereotypical Barbie … you gotta fix it!” Weird Barbie then said, "You’re gonna start to get sad and wishy and complicated!” As an indolent and simpleton, Barbie said, "No!" and later said, "I’ve only ever wanted for everything to stay exactly as it is," which points Social E9's neurosis of Participation, which is about belonging in group activities while ignoring ethics and thought. And yet again, when Weird Barbie asked if Barbie wants to go back to her regular life and pretend this never happened or wants know the truth about the universe... Barbie said the first one. She said she doesn’t want to know. She said, “I’m not adventure Barbie" and that she's "ready to forget now.” Claudio Naranjo labeled the fixation of E9 as Self-Forgetting, which makes sense for this self-abnegating individual.
