super long: charli is an ESFP through and through and a very healthy one at that. all of her functions are so clearly laid out, which makes her so fun to watch. theres a moment in this interview for crash she did recently that shows off her lower 2 functions at around 14 minutes https://youtu.be/61409OxvOEg [talking about a moment in early 2022 where she struggled with mental health and creativity after finishing crash] “i feel very flat right now… and i think it’s because, you know, i’ve done this professionally since i was 16 years old and in that time—yeah, i’ve like, taken a break… here and there, whilst working. but i’ve never actually like, stopped… and absorbed life.” holy tert Te and and inferior Ni. im gonna compare this to some other quotes from people on the same axes as her to really unpack this MITSKI (INFP): [On her hiatus from touring after the Be the Cowboy album cycle and the prospect of quitting music] “I sense that if I don’t step away soon, my self-worth/identity will start depending too much on staying in the game, in the constant churn.” > this quote shows a very drastic preference for Fi > Te. it’s interesting to note how Fi-Te manifests in musicians in the industry in different placements. both artists are concerned with personal time and authenticity and outline a degree of exhaustion from constantly working and producing effective results, but while the dominant Fi, inferior Te mitski actively seeks to reject the “constant churn” of the music industry because of her fear of it consuming her, tertiary Te charli seems less concerned with wholly rejecting it to make a space for her Fi, instead seeking to find a balance, in a way that isnt very disturbed by the fact that she hasn’t taken a break. CATE BLANCHETT (INFJ): "I don't exist in [the world of Hollywood]. I observe it." (i stile this quote from qerassas zendaya analysis and i choose to run in into the ground everytime i talk about Ni) > notice how proud Ni dominant cate blanchett is of not existing in the realm of her immediate surroundings. it’s a sense of comfort to her that she is an observer. charli’s quote however shows that she’s extremely put off by this, that she’s bothered by the thought of her not actually having absorbed life for the past 15 or so years. i think this site forgets that you do in fact use your inferior function to the same degree of complexity (in terms of process) as those with a dominant placement. these quotes outline the same dichotomy of “am i experiencing life fully/am i floating around not aware of my surroundings?” but while the Ni dominant claims this quality of not existing in reality, the Ni inferior is a bit terrified of it. thats the thing about inferior functions—we’re not necessarily bad at them, we’re just kinda scared of them. calling back to the mitski quote, she is outlining a time where she has employed great Te, just like charli is outlining a moment of very complex Ni in reference to her extensive time conjuring artistic visions, concerning herself with the overarching thematics of her career and her record deal. but despite these employments of Te and Ni respectively, both were offput by them, favouring a reconnection with Fi and Se, respectively. i’d love for this site to stop falling into the pothole that types cannot exercise their inferior functions in a complex or developed way, it’s not about “how often does this person use this function?” so much as it is about “does this person get energy from using this function?” great artists and healthy creatives will pick up their inferior function and wield it as a strength. charli’s Ni works so well in the undercurrents of her artistic vision, she uses it very strongly and that’s what’s made her so successful. as she discusses the concept of crash, it’s extremely Ni, everything and every idea gets condensed down to one idea—the title of crash. but at the end of the day, charli is always going to have a preference for her Se, she’s going to mourn the moments of soaking up life that she loses the most, no matter how good her Ni is. that’s what determines her placements.
