Personality

What personality type is Jin Sakai “The Ghost”? Jin Sakai “The Ghost” is an INFP personality type in MBTI, 9w8 - so/sp - 926 in Enneagram, RCOAI in Big 5, EII in Socionics.

Whenever I see an INFP protagonist, there is generally a debate whether the character is an INFP vs an ISFP (especially if that individual is proficient in more physical activities such as combat, etc). But I attribute that as a misunderstanding of the functions. Extroverted sensing does not mean you necessarily excel at physical activity (on the contrary, I’ve seen many lazy xSTPs and xSFPs); all it means is just that you are more prone to focus on action and experiences. Actually, I find that Jin Sakai shares a lot of characteristics from Connor Kenway from Assassin’s Creed III (who is another INFP), who mistakenly gets called an ISFP for those same reasons. It seems to be a common issue. With that being said, Jin Sakai is obviously an INFP. While most Dominant Fi users are fiery and independent individuals, INFPs show it in a more tempered manner that is in reflection of their ideals and experiences (Fi, Ne, Si). For example, it has been described that Jin had no issue disagreeing with his father’s more barbaric methods, even when he was a child. However, his disagreement didn’t result in action and disobedience; but rather, he developed his own ideas of how a samurai should be and lived in accordance to them as he grew older (Fi-Ne). I would attribute this independence in ideas to why he embraced his “Ghost” persona later on in life. Jin also shows a complicated relationship with his memories, traditions, and experiences. He is often reminiscing on the songs his mother used to make him play, his lessons with Lord Shimura, his memories on Iki Island with his father; and he internalizes and creates meaning from those experiences. As such, many of the side-quests (or collectables) in the game are him exploring those past traditions in his life. In INFPs, their tertiary function is Si. Introverted sensing is all about internalizing sensations created from past scenarios, and crafting a subjective framework from how you responded to that stimuli. So despite how Jin values living in accordance to his ideals (Fi-Ne), he still shows a natural inclination towards reflecting on his previous experiences and creating meaning from it (Si). I also think Jin Sakai is a 9w1, not an 9w8. Certainly Jin has his more “aggressive” moments but I’d attribute this to his upbringing as a samurai. As a samurai, it’s your responsibility to be “unshakable,” strict, and “firm” in your dealings, technique and approach. Samurai were established to bring order and to strictly adhere to principles that would distinguish them from the vast amounts of criminals seen in at the time of their original inception. Since I’ve established beforehand that Jin values his idea of how a samurai should act, it makes sense in that he only displays this tendency when he needs to on the job. Simply put, it is out of adherence to his principles, not out of personal motivation (barring some circumstances of course).
