The reason she's at odds with Richard when they meet is because he acts based on his logical understanding of the immediate situation (Ti-Se) while Elissa acts based on how the social situation will affect everyone in the future (Fe-Ni). They're each other's cognitive opposites and that's why they spend so much of the first chapters misunderstanding each other. Elissa doesn't prefer to explore ideas and possibilities from a feeling perspective (Ne-Fi) and doesn't put a lot of weight into her own personal values, or at least she doesn't use them to make decisions.
