Intuition is all about abstraction, and Chino Moreno’s post-Fur lyrics are almost entirely abstract. And yet he doesn’t resemble any INFJ, or indeed any N type. Why is that? Here’s how he describes his lyricism: "I like to be ambiguous when writing to a certain extent, and throwing something so brash against that and playing with it. And also making it sound dimensional. Giving the feeling off that it is raw and it is emotional, but it's not just connected with our personal story. It's not merely about our career and our lives, it's bigger than that. When I hear the music, I get inspired to paint the lyrical pictures you describe, but I'm not always talking about myself.” In other words, Deftones’ lyrics may not actually be all that deep most of the time. They’re just very well-crafted to create the feeling of depth. That might sound like a criticism, but it isn’t. The difference is that if Chino was an Ni dom, you would get a sense of cohesion in his message—or indeed a “message” in the first place. You’d get the sense that most Deftones’ post-Fur songs are ABOUT something. But instead, you get some very masterful visual/aesthetic representations of feelings. You get images and symbols that suggest meaning, but never actually force an ideology upon the listener (see Serj Tankian’s writing for comparison). The MOOD is the message. And the symbols he uses, once you get over their lack of clarity, are almost entirely sensory/visual. They aren’t metaphors—they’re images that SOUND like metaphors, allowing listeners to apply their OWN analogies instead of Moreno forcing his own (except of course in his personal moments). But make no mistake, there IS plenty of Ni to be found. These “patterns” and “shapes” and “textures” often recur. “The waves suck you in.” “Slip into the calming waves.” “You’d like to dive into our brain waves.” There’s something to that, something unknowable within Moreno’s Fi-Ni preoccupations (which do include mythology and history, vaguely hinted at through certain song titles and images). But these recurring ideas are all rooted in Se sensations, serving Fi feelings. They don’t have to expound upon layers of theory, nor are they concerned with the motives of others (Fe). The sensations themselves are enough. It’s also of course worth paying attention to the early stuff, which was way more obviously Fi-Se. Moreno sang about personal relationships and expressed his angst, but soon realized he needed to do something “bigger”. So he became a classic ISFP painter, but rather than using a brush he paints with sounds and words. (Also, there are lots of stories of him being chronically late for rehearsal, being stubborn during recording, etc. Add all these things together and it sounds like Fi to me.)
