𝐈𝐋𝐘𝐀 𝐑𝐎𝐙𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐕 - 𝐄𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐀𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐌 𝐄𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐔𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 (1/2) Although E8 is overwhelmingly the consensus for Ilya's enneagram, I still wanted to write a small argument for why Ilya fits E8 as a whole due to the complete lack of enneagram arguments on his page. With that being said, let's begin. Lust as a whole is extremely prevalent in Ilya's character, and it isn't difficult to understand why. For that reason, this argument should be fairly brief. First, Ilya's focus is constantly directed toward stimulation in the external sphere; whether it be intense hockey matches or his frequent sexual encounters, Ilya constantly chases direct physical pleasure to appease his hedonism. Whenever he comes into contact with unwanted emotions—ie. when he stares in the mirror to reflect on himself after he noticed Shane's relationship with Rose in episode 4—he immediately rejects introspection and instead searches for physically-stimulating experiences to ameliorate his upsetting feelings, like wanting to find a girl to hookup with at a nightclub (which is specifically what he looked for in that respective scenario). > "[Ilya:] F*ck this sh*t. I need to get laid. Let's go out." Analyzing the aforementioned example also makes Ilya's placement in the gut triad become quite clear. Frequently, we see Ilya being too afraid to face his true feelings head on, growing distant and running away from them and toward the physical world, seeking sensory pleasure to replace the strength of his emotions. This fits perfectly with the gut triad's defense mechanism of forgetfulness through action, which is described as such on PDB wiki: > "The defense mechanism of all the gut types is forgetfulness through action. The impulse to action allows them not to be in contact with their emotions and not to allow himself time for the psychic elaboration of what happens in their inner world and in the relationship with the external world." This also highlights a key difference between Shane, who is not a part of the gut triad, and Ilya, who is. Although both characters frequently engage in sexual intercourse with one another over the course of the show, Shane is the one who primarily focuses on his connection with Ilya and the implications of their hookups rather than the specific physical sensations derived from them. This isn't to say that Shane wasn't able to indulge in the physical exhilaration of his sexual encounters, but rather that his emotions held equal importance to the sensory pleasure in these interactions. Ilya, on the other hand, had trouble admitting to himself that he genuinely cared about romance (and his connection to Shane in specific) rather than just casual sex. This is why Shane often felt unfulfilled after hooking up with Ilya; the latter was able to nonchalantly continue casually hooking up without focusing on the further implications of their relationship, but Shane wasn't fully satisfied with or even as focused on the physical aspect of it. For example, after hooking up with Ilya in one of the hotel rooms, Shane was about to text Ilya his realization that "we didn't even kiss", which emphasizes that he focused on the emotional implications of their intercourse apropos of their relationship in lieu of just the satisfactory sensations derived from it directly. This is also due to Ilya constantly directing his gaze toward the present moment and the direct physical world rather than implications and emotions (unlike Shane), which is another part of the E8, demonstrated by the quote below. > "An essential aspect of the E8 is their orientation to the here and now. [...] [They have] the perception that they truly see things for what they really are, without the over-intellectualized clouds of thought obscuring reality."
