MASSIVE ACCIDENTAL EDIT WARNING: I don't know how I managed this but I have somehow replaced my OP with my response to one of the comments. I feel immensely stupid, and I'm not even sure if it's my fault. I have attempted to reconstruct it, but of course it will not be 100% the same. He uses Se-Ni so effortlessly throughout the books it's almost astounding to me that people think he uses predominantly Ne-Si. Here are some quotes to illustrate my points. "There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact" - ISTP's tend to be brilliant at picking up on obvious truths right under their nose that others would normally overlook. "Eliminate all other factors, and the one which remains must be the truth" - an example of the laser focus that Se-Ni brings to the table in conjunction with Ti. I believe this quote and similar quotes are predominantly Ti quotes, but ISTP's are much more likely to be laser focused like this, as compared to their more likely scattered Ne-Si brethren. "1. Knowledge of Literature: Nil. 2. Knowledge of Philosophy: Nil. 3. Knowledge of Astronomy: Nil. 4. Knowledge of Politics: Feeble. 5. Knowledge of Botany: Variable. Well up in belladonna, opium, and poisons generally. Knows nothing of practical gardening. 6. Knowledge of Geology: Practical but limited. Tells at a glance different soils from each other. After walks has shown me splashes upon his trousers, and told me by their colour and consistence in what part of London he had received them. 7. Knowledge of Chemistry: Profound. 8. Knowledge of Anatomy: Accurate but unsystematic. 9. Knowledge of Sensational Literature: Immense. He appears to know every detail of every horror perpetrated in the century. 10. Plays the violin well. 11. Is an expert singlestick player, boxer, and swordsman. 12. Has a good practical knowledge of British law." - This quote shows that the author intended for Sherlock Holmes to only be well versed in that specifically relevant to investigation in the time period. Besides the violin, he ignores all irrelevant information. I can't see an INTP (in general) being this specific about his or her knowledge-base. It's much more likely for an ISTP to be this obsessive and particular about their skill set, as opposed to an INTP, who would be much more likely to research and study what tickles their fancy at the time. That it is not to say, that INTP's aren't capable of becoming passionate experts in one area of study, but that they are more likely to have less concern about the relevance of new information learned to that main interest.
