(1/6) i'm doing this instead of math edit 8/28/23: i failed my math quiz for this >>> Futaba Sakura is FLEV <<< previous posts have already articulated well why futaba is FLEV in PY, so I will try my best to incorporate those arguments. I start with dichotomies + function placements and later move to archetype description. i also skim 2nd logic, because that seems to be mostly agreed upon at this point. quotes in brackets are all from The Syntax of Love, excuse my blasphemous formatting, I know it's inconsistent = 1ST PHYSICS [Strong + Result + Aggressive] = "You wouldn't know aesthetics if it hit you in the face, Inari!" ! the most immediately clear aspect of futaba's relationship to Physics is her Aggressive/Introverted attitude (meaning, in this context, "resistant to input"). she's extremely closed off with any attempt from others to discuss subjects of environment, sensory surroundings, comfort, and aesthetics. - example: she shuts down conversations about anything to do with the physical realm before they start. when makoto (2F) attempts to strike conversation this way, she is ignored. || Makoto: Well then, let's begin with food. What do you like to eat, Futaba? Futaba: Organic ones. Makoto: Um, that wasn't exactly what I meant.. Futaba: .... Makoto: L-Let's try a different topic! How about the weather? I heard that this heat wave is showing no sign of stopping.. Futaba: Dunno. I haven't been outside. || ! I argue that this instance displays not only an Aggressive but also a Result-oriented attitude. - futaba isn't so much concerned with the content of her food, so long as it is organic, nor does the weather interest her, so long as it's not an inconvenience to her from her air-conditioned room. + *this is not the same as a weak or disinterested placement*. on the rare occasion that she *is* outside, she specifically mentions and focuses on physical discomfort such as heat intolerance. furthermore, early in the game, sojiro confirms that futaba leads a particular lifestyle that is inflexible as it is unhealthy. ++ the original version of her calling card describes her as "living an unproductive life of indolence"... putting aside that this is problematic for a variety of reasons, this leads into my next point. the first function is characterized by excess: [ "Although man usually cherishes, cares for, and nurtures his First Function, he, and especially those around him, feel that it is unhappy and even ugly. And this feeling stems from its excessiveness...So it is with the First Function. Its excess reeks of pathology, and thus poisons man to the joy of admiring the most powerful side of his nature." "Taking care of one's appearance, at the same time, does not prevent the "proprietor" from being very untidy and neglecting hygiene, especially in everyday life. And such bifurication is quite understandable, because care about one's body in the 1st Physicist neighbors with absolute confidence in self-sufficiency and extreme goodness of her physical beginning, which does not require any embellishments in the home environment." ] !!! It would be a mistake to conflate this with the "laziness" of 4F. - first of all, if futaba had a Passive Physics placement, she would be less rigid and stingy with regards to physiological comfort and space, and she would accept more assistance in this respect. instead, she is rather materialistic and possessive over her things. I do not only refer to yusuke invading her space--she has this territorial attitude towards everyone (regarding her objects/lifestyle/self), but struggles to recognize the problems inherent in touching others' things without permission, spying on them, etc (i do recognize that this aspect of her character has been exaggerated and flanderized by the fandom, but nevertheless is it a character flaw and a nuisance). - second.. i think people underestimate exactly how active 4F can be, in a surface-level capacity. it is not uncommon for 4F to be rather diligent about their work or interests at the expense of their physical needs. we see this kind of physiological carelessness in akechi (4F), who thinks nothing of injuring and neglecting his body if it facilitates his goals. For the 4th Physicist, these necessities are trivial, even unnoticeable until their neglect impedes their ability to use their higher functions. instead, futaba is highly concerned with her comfort--or, rather, avoiding *discomfort*.
