I wish I was him, just an amazing individual with an exquisite mind, infinite humanity, and endless wisdom, the kind of INFP that genuinely only exists in books from my experience. Kinda hard to type because as the book progresses he so obviously becomes the mouthpiece of Melville who is INFJ, but I think around the beginning where he is most clearly characterized he is INFP 4w5. His initial melancholia being derived from an emotional dissatisfaction with ordinary life, his desire to have an original attitude towards seafaring and whaling, how he revels in complexifying the emotional depth of other individuals like Ahab (who are really fairly simple in themselves; no one on the Pequod is really as deep as Ishmael, including Ahab, I don't care what Harold Bloom says), his interest in the metaphysical, his strong value-system, and his aspirational Te with his info-gathering style in certain chapters, all points to this.
