First, Tecciztecatl was meant to be the sun god, but was too cowardly, so the Nanahuatzin sacrificed himself to become the sun god, changing his name to Tonatiuh. Tecciztecatl joined as well, but due to his cowardice a rabbit was thrown on his face and therefore he became the Moon.
