Tantai Jin is not your typical (XNTJ) antagonist. Actually, I am pretty sure he is an INFJ: Ni-Fe-Ti-Se. We all seem to agree that he is a Ni-dominant. It is very obvious by the way he plans out his every move (his schemes) and how he lives for the future. But what I actually want to talk about is his VERY OBVIOUS Fe and Ti. First, let’s look up the definitons of Fi and Fe. “Fi weighs inner life and feeling before considering the outward repercussions, whereas Fe tends to make decisions based the outward environment and how their feelings will affect their physical world.” WHY Fe? - Mindset - He has no moral code or goal of his own. He constantly changes his mindset through-out the show. First, he had a mindset of “I will do anything if it means I could live another day.” He was all about survival (enneagram 6 btw). When he got access to power, he valued power above anything else. He even decided to take the throne. (enneagram 8) BUT his sudden change of heart did not come to him naturally. After Ye Xiwu saved him with the world-overturning jade, he had a conversation with the ancient devil god. In which the ancient devil god asked him: “Have you ever asked yourself what your inner desires are?” Tantai Jin repeated the question in surprise. Because NO he never actually considered his own feelings and desires before. By the way, the ancient devil god appeared and manipulated him right before he got demonic powers as well. After falling in love with Ye Xiwu, he gave up on his path of power and wanted to protect and unite the people. Tantai Jin we met at the beginning of the show never cared about others or power. He continiously changed his world-view. While Li Susu (a Fi-user) not even once changed her path or had a change of heart about her morals, even if it might cost her own life. That is why Tantai Jin could not relate to her at all. (Her escape from the ship for example) Speaking of Ye Xiwu, they are polar opposites so I will be comparing them a lot. - Feelings - He also rationalites his (and others) emotions a lot. He asks a lot of questions like “What is this strange feeling?”, “Why did I get shy?”, “Did you do this for love?” etc. For example, At Xiao Lin’s wedding, he acknowledged he felt something in his heart when he saw the scared face of Ye Xiwu, but he couldn’t put a name on it. He noticed his feelings for Ye Xiwu way later, because he struggled to understand what is going on. He was constantly observing (Ni-Se) Ye Xiwu and his own actions, trying to find an answer. In the dream, (episodes 3-4) right before he decided to k-word himself, he had a conversation with Xiao Lin. Xiao Lin: “How did it feel to be loved by everyone? You got everything you ever wanted. But can you really feel happiness?” Tantai Jin: “I can’t. I felt nothing.” Xiao Lin: “See. All emotions, affections and desires mean nothing to you. All you ever know is to protect yourself (enneagram 6, sp variant.) You don’t understand or care about other people’s pain at all.” Tantai Jin: “I understand. I understand it all. I just can’t feel it.” Yes, he was born without feelings to begin with. Naturally you would think he lacks Fi. But we can always say “Well, that does not count.” So here is the reason why I showed you this conversation specifically. Despite being emotionless, as stated, he certainly can show empathy. But again, Fi-users show empathy through their own prior experiences (feelings), while Fe-users observe and rationalize. - Others - He is also more concerned about people’s feelings and opinions rather than of his own. He spent his whole upbringing trying to please people. He even pretended to be someone else (Xiao Lin). But he did not do it because of an internal desire to be liked, he only did it because he wanted others to stop bullying him. “I know people don’t like me. Normally, I should feel sad inside.” (his past conversation with Yingxin) Again, he lets other people influence him way too much like: The ancient devil god, Xiao Lin, Ye Xiwu… +
