(1/2) I think this song is a good representation of several of E9's fundamental qualities, those being its presence in the gut/anger triad (E8, E9, E1) and the suppression of anger that occurs in this type. Although it might seem unclear how a seemingly placid person (such as the Maiden in this song) can belong in the anger triad, we see here how anger can be stored up for a long, long time until it reaches a specific breaking point, at which it becomes unleashed at full force. To begin, I would say that anger--the emotion associated with the gut triad (E8, E9, E1)--is a major motif of this song. It's the first emotion mentioned after we get a brief description of the Maiden as young and beautiful--not shame, not fear, but wrath, as in "O Heavenly, Heavenly Waters, howl your wrath! / O Heavenly, Heavenly Maiden, weep thyself to sleep!" Even from the outset of the song, we already learn that her tears represent anger. Judging from the fact that her tears are powerful enough to bring water to a whole village system, she must be a very angry person indeed. And yet, she doesn't express it in a straightforward way. Apparently, she's been beaten by the people around her long enough that she's become a reliable source of water, but she doesn't retaliate. In Naranjo's E9 book, the introduction describes E9 like this: "The fundamental feature of E9 is self-forgetfulness. To define it in greater depth, Claudio Naranjo uses the words laziness or inertia, which point to a lack of interest in one's own internal world, in looking within oneself. [...] Psychologically, it is a resistance to any change, which takes place in the absence of motivation, conflict avoidance, and repression of emotions, with blindness to any friction that could occur at the intrapsychic or interpersonal level. It is as if the E9 resists to differentiate himself from the other and to have awareness of the differentiation between its internal parts, in order to live in a state of illusory union, outside and inside oneself." E9 is conflict-avoidant and resists change, which would explain how the villagers could get away with beating the Maiden so that her tears came with the regularity of seasons. When analyzing the Maiden's wing, we can observe that the anger we do see from her, first sublimated and then fully unleashed, is tinged with the righteousness of E1--"wrath," as defined in biblical terms--rather than E8's lust. Therefore, I would say she's 9w1 instead of 9w8. Instinctual stacking-wise, I think she's pretty straightforward. She clearly places a huge amount of emphasis on personal chemistry above resources, and definitely society as a whole. Even before we see her fall in love, we learn that she lives "[d]eep within a cavern, on the outskirts of the village"--not exactly someone who cares about integrating with larger society. And ultimately, it's the interference of the villagers with one of her personal relationships that causes her to finally unleash her wrath on them. Her personal safety is of some importance to her, hence her weeping whenever beaten, but she still sacrifices it to become a demon with her lover at the end. One may also note that the second instinct is a "playground instinct"--in the case of sp-second, the character's health and resources become a source of exploration, rather than a neurosis or blind spot. The Maiden subjects herself to physical changes--piercing and being torn apart--because of her intense emotions around this final betrayal by the villagers, so I think she's sp-second rather than so-second. Subtype-wise: although we don't get to see how exactly she interacts with her love, which would be the easiest way to determine if she merges with him (We do know that she was "left in agony" after he was banished--I think this is a general sx-dominant trait, though), we do have this from Naranjo's E9 book: "The sexual E9 is much more like the E4 because it is closer to its despair, and it is less happy than the conservation E9. Unlike the Four, however, the sexual Nine is not aware of the depth of his pain because he is distracted by worrying about not making the other suffer. The E4 cries and feels his pain, the sexual E9 cries and feels the pain of others." The Maiden does not act on her despair for a long time, and the people around her clearly aren't in despair (until it's too late for them to have regrets). However, she's not as emotionally insensate as sp9 is, and she does not go out of her way to help her community like so9 does. That's why I think sx9 fits her best out of the three subtypes of E9.
