(1/2) Cardinal Richelieu is a sx 1w9. For reference, here is the official sx 1 descriptions (PDB wiki, but just excerpts from various enneagram authors): https://wiki.personality-database.com/books/enneagram/page/sexual-1-in-detail Sx 1s typically believe are entitled to the right to correct/reform others because they are superior and/or understand the correct/right way to do things. In addition to Richelieu's obsession with keeping the prince "pure", we see his backstory in chapter 65/Epilogue 9, which falls well in line with sx 1 motivations. In the epilogue, Erwin/Richelieu at 10 years old secretly lead debates that would "find and dissect cracks in the faith" despite being part of a family of clergy and receiving priest training himself since the age of six. The debates were "a small game for a young boy." Later when he visits the church with his mother, a priest sings Richelieu's praises and begs his mother for the opportunity to teach him. However, Richelieu simply thinks, "I'm bored, I've already surpassed what the priest can teach me. I'm well-versed in theology and other studies as well..all of it came easily to me. I am different. I am not like other humans." The narration then goes: The boy did not think like the others. Upon realizing his capabilities at an early age, instead of accepting his faith, he chose to throw the rock to shatter the truth that makes the world go round. The boy had many ways to refute the truth, and therefore had no reason to fear the world. For his gathering, he needed a few sons from noble families- bright and rebellious boys who were sure they would be trailblazers of this generation. He found them easily enough. They met repeatedly, and Erwin was their king." When he goes to meet Nick's older brother, he thinks: "I bet he'll ask me about what I want to do in the future. I, of course, have no places to become a philosopher. I just find it fun to deny the existence of god, the highest authority that a human can challenge. The shakier the bridge, the more exciting it feels after crossing it." When his rosary breaks, he initially thinks of it as a "bad sign" then laughs at himself for thinking so. He leaves his rosary on the ground and drops his bible along with it. However, when he fall from the bridge, he is encompassed by fear. The narration goes: "Fear. The boy couldn't feel anything but fear. Fear of his mind slowly becoming paralyzed. Fear of his ambitions coming to an end. Fear of death. Instinctively feeling that this would be the end, all he had on his mind was the feeling of regret and wanting to live. He earnestly cried out to the higher power he had denounced. In that moment, he saw salvation./ When he didn't come home after the sun went down, the count and countess sent people out to search for him. He was nowhere to be found. Richelieu's thoughts after the narration above: "Since I did not believe and follow faithfully with the body and soul I was given, the lord appeared in a revelation to show me the error of my ways. My fate and capabilities belong to you. I will live my life solely for you." and Richelieu becomes one of the youngest cardinals. Flashforward and he thinks of Shuli and how she could have gained so much confidence in just a few months. He thinks of the low possibility that she may have been saved by a divine power just as he had but denies it by saying the chances are too low. He thinks: "If, by chance it turns out that she was blessed by god, and she is working towards the same goal as I am, I will join hands with her. If that is not the case, I will simply destroy her." Overall, Richeliu is an sx 1 antagonist who believes he is a superior human being and has the right to correct/reform others or destroy others who are against him. When he was younger he believed he was so superior that he was even was able to challenge divinity, but over time made it his mission to reform the others in a dedication to that divinity because he believes he was saved by it. However, he still has that entitlement and believes he is superior enough to serve in his position hence how he continues to looks down on everyone else. Additionally, sx 1 explains his obsession with protecting Theobald's purity and believing he has a right to do so.
