Stoicism, as a philosophical school founded by Zeno of Citium, is essentially centred on the principles of ascetism as opposed to hedonism (though it has the "laissez-faire" attitude in common with epicurianism, an hedonist school of thought from the same time period), prioritising reason and thinking over impulsivity and emotionally based decisions, and more generally, the basic principles of cultivating human virtues such as wisdom, humility, rationality, emotional and behavioral stability (and an overall emotional homeostasis/equilibrium), as well as discipline, strength, courage, resilience, gratitude and kindness. The main goal of the philosophy is to reach contentment and purpose in life through the cultivation of virtues (mentally, physically and emotionally), and striving for moderation and balance in daily life. The main emphasis however, is in rationality. A stoic, is ideally, someone that never takes impulse into consideration, and who in practice, does their best to minimise irrational actions or words. It aims to focus on controlling everything that is in the person's control, and let go on the situations, things, people that cannot be controlled. A good stoic is therefore, someone that does not waste time or energy on things that are out of control, and who focuses on developing virtues through discipline, and who embraces pain by rationalising it : “Sickness is a problem for the body, not the mind — unless the mind decides that it is a problem." - Epictetus. In other words, the (commonly regarded as) "negatives" of life such as death, pain, suffering, trauma are a normal part of it and should be embraced, as they are knowledge, experience and virtues in disguise, and should therefore be accepted, as we have no control over the supernatural forces as mere human beings, and the the force even in itself is insignificant in the grand calculus of the universe, so why dwell on it ? This would remind us of an "healthy" E1, or an E1 on the path for integration, in which the vice of anger characterised by excessive need for control (of what is not under control of the mind or body, essentially) is fought by the user, as to try to reach the virtue of serenity. When in the path to reach the virtue of serenity, the type user becomes at peace with themselves and their surroundings, and do not feel the need to control their surroundings, or better even, control their need for control. Neither are they overly perfectionistic and exigent with themselves. Indeed, by that point their self-esteem is stable enough, and their internalised anger is dealt with easily though discipline and productivity. They become less righteous morally, and instead use their sense of justice in a way that allows the autonomy of other points of view. Perfectionism becomes then improvement, striving to do better, to do better, without setting up standards that are too high to reach like at the lowest state. The righteous person becomes then a morally well-rounded person, and the angry person, someone confident and productive that manages anger well enough. Even without taking the virtues into consideration, stoicism would still fit E1 the most, as when stoicism is badly applied, it becomes excessive repression and denial, as well as perfectionism, which are coincidentally also characteristics of the vice of anger in the E1. As for the subtype, SP1 fits more than any other, as it is based on self-improvement while simultaneously letting go off the external world. When badly applied the perfectionism is self-centered, though the righteousness can extend to the external dimensions as well. Nonetheless, the virtues also show an internal improvement over an external one, the social or sexual aspects might as well be non-existent when stoicism is applied correctly and after a lot of time experiencing said philosophy. I would still settle on SO for when it is badly applied (though in that case it shows in all subtypes) over the more aggressive, violent and extreme SX subtype.
سيرة شخصية
Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium in Athens in the early 3rd century BCE. It is a philosophy of personal virtue ethics informed by its system of logic and its views on the natural world, asserting that the practice of virtue is both necessary and sufficient to achieve eudaimonia (happiness, lit. 'good spiritedness'): one flourishes by living an ethical life. The Stoics identified the path to eudaimonia with a life spent practicing virtue and living in accordance with nature.
