She is a friend of Madeleine Forestier. She has a flexible Parisian morality that does not hold her tongue. Clotilde de Marelle is Duroy's lover. She rents him an apartment to see him; she is a free and passionate woman, ill married to a man older than herself and often absent. Cheerful, futile and intemperate, she likes popular places, even bad ones, where the people have fun. She cannot stand being resisted and does not tolerate Duroy's behavior as a bastard, when he abandons her for other richer women or when he marries Madeleine and then Suzanne. He is a capricious being but who loves Duroy with a sincere love.
