Biography
John Hunyadi (Latin: Ioannes Corvinus; Hungarian: Hunyadi János, Romanian: Iancu de Hunedoara) (1406/07 – 11 August 1456) was a leading Hungarian military and political figure during the 15th century. He was the son of a noble family of Romanian ancestry. Appointed voivode of Transylvania and head of a number of southern counties, he started the defense of the frontiers in 1441, having resounding successes against the Ottoman Empire, which was expanding menacingly over the southern Europe in the 1440s-50s. Pope Pius II referred to him as Athleta Christi (Christ's Champion). John Hunyadi was also an eminent statesman. He died on 11 Aug.1456, weeks after his triumph at Nándorfehérvár/Belgrade (July 1456), falling to a plague epidemic that had broken out in the crusader camp.
