Films like Come and See and Requiem for a Dream couldn't be any more different from each other, but they're both under the psych-horror macrogenre, and are some of the best in their respective genres (war & drugsploitation). On the side of manga, Inio Asano's Oyasumi Punpun is also considered as such despite having none in common with the archetypes of the genre, spurious as it can be. However, the arduous focus on the element of failure, trauma and psychological abuse eventually coalesce in the second half of the manga with genuine horror as the protagonist's mental state essentially breaks alongside the one he loves as a perceived soulmate.

Biography

Psychological Horror is a subgenre of Horror that aims at creating horrific, paranoiac, suspenseful or unsettling effects through in-depth use of mental and emotional states or psychological conditions. This may involve replacing physical threats with psychological ones (e.g. madness, hallucinations), thorough exploration of the mind of the disturbed, mentally ill, or unreliable protagonists (including the bad guys/monster of the week), replacing overt displays of horror (monsters, deformed killers) by more subtle, creepy details and an eerie mood or atmosphere that play on the audience's fears. Often overlaps with Surreal Horror. This subgenre is particularly common in Japanese horror, or "J-Horror".
