Biography

Istanbul is the largest city in the Republic of Turkiye and the country's economic, cultural and historical center. It is an ancient city and has been very historically significant as a result, due to its geographic location, having served as the seat of administration for the Eastern Roman/Byzantine Empire, the Crusaders (briefly) and later, for the Ottoman Empire. It originally went by the name of 'Lygos' (according to Pliny the Elder) after which it came to be known as 'Byzantium'. Around 330 CE, the Roman Emperor Constantine I, relocated the capital of the empire from Rome to Byzantium (Nova Roma/New Rome) and thus, the city was re-christened to 'Constantinople', in his honor. The city straddles the Bosphorus strait, and lies in both Europe and Asia, with a population of over 15 million residents, comprising 19% of the population of Turkiye. Istanbul is the most populous city in Europe, and the world's fifteenth-largest city.
