Marco MBTI Personality Type

Personality

What personality type is Marco? Marco is an ESTJ personality type in MBTI, 3w4 - so/sp - in Enneagram, SLOEN in Big 5, in Socionics.

**Spoilers ahead. Up to Season 3.** Surprised nobody's considered SO1 for Marco, especially considering the arc the writers made him go down. I can agree that AT FIRST Marco seemed like a SO3- it seemed pretty obvious. He held onto his title of being an Alvarez throughout Process 104. He was cocky, arrogant, and hyped himself up as someone destined for greatness. However, I don't think Marco fits the SO3 archetype exactly as many people think. E3 centers around the idea of vanity: the need to be the idealized version of one's self and fully believing that you are. I'm not denying that Marco has some form of E3 in him- it's very clear that he's vain and acts as if he's the ideal image he wants to be, but I'd argue it's only in Season 1. Additionally, I would argue his actions in Process 104 were more that of a SO1. For example, during the test with the food rations and vent, Marco doesn't utilize the fact he's an Alvarez or the fact he's (arguably) the most competent out of everyone there to get what he wanted. He naturally took on a leadership role out of necessity and managed to bring the group together through strict rule adherence. When the rations arrived, Marco did insist he get the first bite because he led the charge, but he willingly compromises to let food be distributed in alphabetical order. Already, he's acting on principles and strict societal standards as opposed to what a core 3 would do and act on perceived superiority and status. Furthermore, he later states that the test naturally built a micro-society of rulers and ruled, and that those who refuse to follow that dynamic will simply be punished. The fact that he thinks this hierarchy exists, and let alone justifies his actions of stealing from everyone in order to complete the test exemplifies the SO1 traits in Marco. His control and dominance of those around him in Process 104 can easily be taken as SO1 superiority. It's clear Marco sees himself above others, but he isn't willing to cut corners in order to make that fact apparent to others. He'll show you why he's an Alvarez, and he doesn't care if you dislike it or not. After Process 104 and being thrown back to Inland, it's clear that he doesn't care about being an Alvarez at all. He doesn't expect the high and mighty treatment (you could argue it's because he's disgraced, and while I think that's part of it, any E3 would still try to use their image as a way of getting what they want). First, he tries to join the Militia and proves his worth to them. Despite the fact he was crippled, he used his wits and strong understanding of the environment around him to secure a spot in the Militia. It's very apparent from his demeanor throughout his duration in the Militia for S2 that he doesn't care about status or who he associates with (at least to the extent of being his core enneatype), but instead tries to adhere to his strict standard of self and other people in society. He is led by morals and values that he logically concludes through his experiences (after being "scammed" in Process 104, he learns that the true way to obtain what you want in life is not through name and status, but by effort and struggle). Marco has the initiative to kill the leader of the Militia just to show his supposed superiority. No E3 is going to try and overthrow a leader- they will appeal to that leader and act much closer to their right-hand man more than anything. It is the E1 that believes they are fit to be leader because it is ONLY their idea and vision that is correct. S3 shows a softer side to Marco- him with his son. Marco's interactions with his son makes it apparent he's SO1. He wants to push his ideologies onto his son when he's finally old enough to understand (shown by the new letter Marco wrote for him and the things Marco made him do while they were in the slums of Inland). Additionally, the fact he becomes leader for the revolution for new leadership over the Shell just shows how far he's willing to make sure his ideology is enforced. He doesn't settle for anything less than perfection, and he's willing to do whatever it takes within his morality to achieve it. It's very important to make the distinction that Marco has shown to never betray his ideals or worldview. Those very things are essential to him, and giving them up is like giving himself to the wills of others. Arguments are strongly encouraged!
