There are a lot of tragic figures in art but I believe Marvin’s life was one of the most painful in recent history. The contrast between his extremely aggressive and domineering father juxtaposed with his sweet and caring mother was probably extremely confusing to him, especially considering his father was a preacher to the outside world but in the house he wore his wife’s clothes and was a crossdresser. He had suicidal thoughts before the age of ten and he credited his mother for being the only person who helped him stay sane. This upbringing is a recipe for substance abuse and lifelong suffering. Anna Gordy was also an extremely toxic wife and their troubles plagued him throughout his adult life even after their divorce. He wasn’t completely innocent but it’s easy to see why he misbehaved when you take his numerous problems into consideration. Poor guy. Despite all of this he proved himself to be an absolutely brilliant artist and created some of the most beautiful and meaningful albums of all time. His importance and influence cannot be overstated.
