beautiful character arc that shows how avarice works: holding onto what one has in light of not getting much from others. the five fears being depleted, leading to a defensive expectation of impoverishment. knowledge is power, so the type observes without getting involved, especially emotionally. noiz covers himself in the false idea that he does not need anyone or anything: "nah. i'd eat the same thing every day, as long as it's good." (limitation of desire) "normal people don't do this sort of thing without a motive." noiz waves his injured hand back and forth. "helping strangers? it's inefficient. there's nothing to gain." "so you think i only treated your wound because i want something from you?" (aoba) "people only help each other when they want something. that's the only reason to do anything that doesn't benefit you directly. because you think it will benefit you indirectly." fives fear being alienated and used up, their need to retreat comes from the fact that people will always demand something from them. noiz was locked inside a room and ordered to stay away from people, he told himself that he could take care of himself, he didn't need anyone. this fact fueled his altered perception of reality and shaped his already apathetic behaviour (since he does not feel pain, he lacks empathy and care). furthermore, due to noiz's automatic detachment from emotions, he is skilled at performing rational, objective analyses of issues or situations, which especially helps him remain calm in a crisis. though aoba eventually points out his fragility, how he actually wants to connect with others. noiz's devotion towards rhyme is an example of a subtle and unconscious way he got to experience the connection he was deprived of. his cultivation of knowledge is expressed by rhyme and tech; others do not bring him as much pleasure as knowledge does (predictable, safe -> cant find the exact quote, but aoba explicitly tells him in a talk about "trades" of some sort that aoba can give him a benefit that he would like, and that would be knowledge). Biography
(ノイズ Noizu) is a hacker, information broker and the leader of the Rhyme team Ruff Rabbit who challenges Aoba constantly to a Rhyme battle (much to the latter's refusal). He is noted for his considerable amount of piercings and lacks a sense of touch, resulting in being emotionally and physically detached from others. He is voiced by Satoshi Hino.
