Biography

Xue Wanche (? - March 6, 653), a general in the early Tang Dynasty of China, was a native of Xianyang, Jingzhao, and his ancestral home was Fenyin, Hedong. Xue Wanche was the son of Xue Shixiong, the general of the left imperial guard of the Sui Dynasty. Later, he and his brother Xue Wanjun came to Tang Dynasty from Youzhou. Because they had made great contributions in conquering the Liang division, they were awarded the title of General of Chariots and Cavalry and Duke of Wu'an County. They followed Luo Yi to fight in other rebel armies and joined the crown prince. Li Jiancheng was appointed to the shogunate and was appreciated by him. During the Xuanwumen Incident, he led the troops of the East Palace to fight and even counterattacked the Prince of Qin's Palace. It was not until Li Shimin sent someone to show the prince's head that he put down his weapons and led dozens of cavalry to flee into Zhongnan Mountain. Later, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty appreciated his bravery and sent envoys many times to summon him before he came back to worship the general. In the third year of Zhenguan (629), he conquered the Turks from Li Jing as the commander-in-chief of the army and defeated Jieli Khan. Due to his meritorious service, he was promoted to the right-guard general and became the Duke of the county. In the thirteenth year of Zhenguan (639), Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty ordered Hou Junji, Xue Wanche and others to lead troops to attack Qu's Gaochang. In the fifteenth year of Zhenguan (641), he and Li Shixi attacked Xue Yantuo's Huihe army, and he was promoted to general of the left guard after meritorious service. Confess one son as a county marquis. In the 18th year of Zhenguan (644), Princess Danyang, the eldest daughter of Shang Gao, worshiped the Prince Consort and became the Governor of Hangzhou. Later, in the 22nd year of Zhenguan (648), she participated in the Eastern Expedition to Goguryeo and led troops from Laizhou to Fuzhou. During the sea attack, he repeatedly made military exploits, but he could not let others down, so he was demoted out of resentment and returned home. During the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty, Xue Wanche conspired with Fang Yiai, Chai Lingwu and others to support Li Yuanjing (Uncle Gaozong), the king of Jing. The affair was revealed and he was executed in the fourth year of Yonghui (653).
