Biography
Yusuf ibn Tashfin (c. 1009–1106) was the most prominent leader of the Almoravid dynasty, founder of Marrakesh (1062), and unifier of much of the Maghreb and parts of al-Andalus. A pious, ascetic Berber warrior from the Lamtuna tribe, he took power after Abu Bakr ibn Umar, expanded the empire from the Senegal River to central Algeria, strictly applied Maliki law, and famously saved Muslim al-Andalus by decisively defeating Alfonso VI at the Battle of Zallaqa (Sagrajas) in 1086, halting the Christian Reconquista for a time. He was the first western Muslim ruler to officially use the title “Amir al-Muslimin” with Abbasid recognition. He died in Marrakesh at around 97 years old.
