Biography

Pheidippides/Philippides was an Athenian courier who is fabled to have made a heroic run from Athens to Sparta and then back, asking the Spartans for assistance in the imminent invasion of Athens by Persia. When the Spartans chose to defer out of respect for their gods, Pheidippides went and fought the Persians himself at the Battle of Marathon. After running 26 miles back from Marathon to Athens, he announces to Athens that the Persians have been defeated, right before dropping dead of sudden cardiac arrest. Pheidippide's story is dramatized in Robert Browning's poem Pheidippides. His story also makes up the etymology for the modern-day usage of the word marathon.
