S1E1: Psychiatrist: "Everything you've told me today is total fiction isn't it" (including pretending Johnny Cash's backstory is his own lol) Jane: *smirks* "Yes" Psychiatrist: "Why? I can see you're in real pain. Why not tell the truth?" Jane: *finally serious* "The truth is mine" Psychiatrist: *le shock* This scene paired with the entire rest of episode 1 tells you his type immediately. If that episode wasn't enough for you, in S1E2 Lisbon (high Si user) says: "You're seeing more than what's actually there. You have a tendency to do that. Not every murder is a secret, inside of a secret, inside of a secret. There's not always a hidden pattern". And he responds "not always, but SOMETIMES there is" i.e. the potential of there being a hidden pattern is worth exploring & imagining more than what IS actually there - This is NeTi. He also loves surprising everyone with his schemes (NeTiFe) instead of clueing others in on his theories & plans so they can actually help - also his desire to do/prove/figure out everything on his own is also a sign of Ti. Speaking of, the multitude of out of the box methods he deploys to solve cases is also NeTi (as opposed to the TeSi systematic approach of the standard detective). He also has that stereotypical trait of using humor/sarcasm as a mask & defense mechanism which is common amongst low Fe users. It's ironic given how tormented & obnoxious he is, but he is functionally one of the healthiest ENTPs in fiction using Ne, Ti, Fe & Si constantly. He's basically a walking billboard for the type & one of the most compellingly written ENTPs I've ever seen....god I love this show 🥹
Biography
The titular mentalist, Patrick Jane is a former psychic and stage performer, but took a job with the CBI when the serial killer Red John killed his wife and daughter after Patrick badmouthed him on TV, hoping to exact revenge. Possessing exceptional knowledge of human behavior, extensive meditative and hypnotic training, a refined memory and superhuman deductive skills, Patrick Jane is one of the most valuable agents of the CBI in the fight against crime. Though technically he's not a cop, just a consultant.
