Jarylo (Cyrillic: Ярило or Ярила), alternatively Yaryla, Jarilo, Yarilo, Iarilo, or Gerovit, is a Slavic god of vegetation, fertility and springtime. Jarilo appears as a young man riding a white horse, wearing a white cloak, and carrying sheaves of wheat (a fertility symbol). He is given to indulging his passions, and his influence is seen in any number of rash actions, even if they are not directly related to love or other affairs of the heart. His death is mourned every fall, and his return is celebrated every spring. Farmers, lovers, warriors, and others who take rash actions or desire fertility pay homage to him.
