Empedocles, (c.494-c.434BC) was a Greek Presocratic philosopher who is best known for espousing the cosmogonic theory of the four classical elements: meaning water, air, earth, and fire are the four composite elements of the universe. Empedocles was also known for advocating the view that Love and Strife would mix and separate these elements.
