A difficult character to type. I'm going with INTP for the time being, but I'm not sure. Hans Castorp goes through a colossal transformation in the book. He's introduced as an almost prosaic man without any abstract concerns and with very mundane interests, and then goes on to become overwhelmed with philosophical ideas and and complex emotions. Perhaps the character development here is not completely believable and I think that wasn't Mann's intention anyway. The Magic Mountain is a book of ideas and Hans Castorp, as well as the other characters, seem like vessels through which Mann introduces and develops some of his thoughts.
