After reading The Sunshine Court, I believe Jean to be an ISFJ with (understandably) underdeveloped Fe. (Sorry, I’m about to rant, I am invested!) There is a duality of rationality and compassion inside of him: a kind and loyal Jean, who is gentle and observant, and feels lonely; a cold and analytical Jean, who is distrusting and judgmental of others, and feels betrayed. That’s because he is stuck in a Si-Ti loop: he attempts to rationalise all the abuse that has happened to him, by analysing it over and over. He relies heavily on Ti to find explanations that normalise his awful experiences, because it makes it more bearable to think people are not that bad and that it is just the way things are. He is desperate for security and stability (Si dom), willing to endure anything rather than risk any change in his life. He is terrified of novelty as much as longs for it (Ne inf). While Jean focuses on his identity, I find it interesting how he always defines himself through a group: his family, the Ravens, his role as a backliner… His focus seems to be always on group harmony. Of course, with the Ravens, this wasn’t conventional harmony, but rather the impact you have on the group. The Raven rule that worked “best” (yikes) on him is the buddy system: Jean doesn’t seem all that hung up on being the best or the most useful, despite what he says; he is more desperate to NOT drag his partner or the group down, be it the Ravens or the Trojans. He doesn’t want to fall behind; he wants to belong. Because he never got to have normal relationships, his Fe is very fragile. He seems cold at first, even ruthless, because he buries his unruly emotions in favour of “logic” (throwing rude comments very matter-of-factly because this is how he was taught people interacted). His Fe is eclipsed by a paranoid Ti: his past experiences have tainted his vision of others, and he refuses to believe that the Trojans’ wholesomeness is not an act. He keeps expecting “the mask to drop”. However, he is very focused on other people’s feelings, noticing even the smallest of details. While he pretends not to care, he still takes note of it (telling Lucas about his brother’s major, worrying for Cody, remembering Jeremy’s custom ringtones…). He sometimes uses his observations to try and reply with exactly what the other person wants to hear or to try and do what he thinks is expected of him (with the coaches, mostly, but also Jeremy). That’s why he is considered “docile”, when that is actually a rather calculating show of Fe. Even as a child, his Fe turned into self-sacrifice and self-denial as he protected his sister. He seems himself only through her when he learns the truth about her. He also stands up for others before he does for himself (his sister, Kevin, or even Jeremy when he realises what Lucas implied about them). In order to get out of this loop, he needs to develop his Fe and discover that people can be sincerely kind and that relationships should not be rooted in sacrifice and abnegation. I believe he is a “starving dog” for genuine relationships!
