(1/2) fern being typed as a 4 lowkey triggers me both 9 and 4 have the similarity of trying to find their own identity, however they go about it in different ways 4s have a sense of enjoyment in their own self deprecation, they know exactly who they are, they believe they shouldn't get rid of their problems as they're part of who they are, they find some sort of beauty in their own emotional "masochism", a typical 4 growth story would revolve around them realizing that being ok is ok, that realizing letting go of their self deprecation is actually the healthy option to choose 9s on the other hand face the same identity crisis but face it straight up, they focus directly on the questions like "who am i?", "what is my identity?" etc. they deeply struggle finding the answer to those questions because of their own habits of numbness, their bodies store so much information because of this but can't really verbally elaborate, which just leaves them with a gut impulse and an overprotective sense of self, they try to numb their anger as much as possible, the typical 9 growth story is about finally taking initiative in their lives, finally getting the answers about their identity by themselves the only arguments i see for 4 here are purely stereotypical "he's a 4 because he's constantly searching for his identity and he's just a misunderstood kid who just wants to be loved" like please just read some theory before making arguments when does fern have any sense of identity other than him being reborn as a tree? how is he in any way not facing his identity issue and instead uses it as fuel to swell in his self deprecation? let me tell you that the answer to those questions is that he doesn't do that at all ever since fern is born, he realizes that he's just a mere clone of finn, just his shadow, he has all of finn's memories but hasn't actually lived them, which makes him go insane and very unhealthy, as he believes he has just one task to do, find his own identity by himself, not just be finn's clone made out of grass this just starts his path into his own dark disintegration, he changes his name to fern, beats up the living shi out of the evil wizard that created him as he is told by the wizard that he was born just because the wizard thought it would be a funny joke, the evil demon that literally controls him comes to the idea that he should just get rid of finn and become finn himself after he realizes he can just morph into finn's identical look, even becomes a villian by joining uncle gumbald's evil army and becoming the evil green knight why does he do all of this? because of his constant search for his identity, he tries to find out directly by asking his creator only to get hit by a stupid answer in his search of identity he is always swayed off from all the correct choices that lead to a good path by the demon inside of him, meanwhile he just thinks he's making up his own identity while not realizing the desperate processes that he's taking while at it, like trying to become finn or becoming the green knight and so on he however doesn't enjoy this new found identity of his because of its fakeness, as the green knight he becomes a symbol of rebellion, but not his own rebellion or his own believes, but rather the ones of uncle gumbald's in the final of the series, jake throws that red potion on the floor and everyone gets sent into this world that is really just their unconscious minds blended into one world, fern becomes this pterodactyl lookin ahh mf who is just full of confusion and stress and he doesn't know how to cope with it, he just knows how to lash out or have the instinct to fight, finn follows him and instead of fighting he tries to reason with him, takes him back through their own "shared torment" and eventually come to the center of all the problems: the grass demon that has been controlling fern all this time they finally get rid of it, only problem being that the demon was the thing that was actually keeping fern alive, without the demon, fern will die however, after the demon inside of him finally is gone, knowing he will die, he just couldn't care anymore, he realized his goal of finding his own identity, his only last wish is for his seed to be planted, finn plants fern's seed right at the root of his now destroyed tree house and it instantly grows into this small tree that has finn's soul sword in it fern might have died, but finally he has found his own identity
