Maria is literally me as a child. The immovable stubbornness over things that she's deemed of special value, the solitude and secrecy, the imaginative inner world with dozens of characters, the notebooks full of spells and magic, even things like the belief that her mother is possessed by a bad witch when she's angry. Completely uncanny. I'm not sure I've ever identified so reflexively with a child character before. Makes me feel seen.
