Bill Hicks was the first comedian that I heard that went beyond just telling a joke to get a laugh. In every joke he always built up to a punch line that made light of how stupid and irrational society and people could be. He left you thinking about what he said in the punchline and then you realise how bleak the world is. His last 1993 interview is highly insightful on this.

William Melvin Hicks (December 16, 1961 – February 26, 1994) was an American comedian, social critic, satirist and musician. His material, encompassing a wide range of social issues including religion, politics, and philosophy, was controversial, and often steeped in dark comedy. At the age of 16, while still in high school, he began performing at the Comedy Workshop in Houston, Texas.
