Her mind is usually elsewhere chronologically, whether that be in the past or in the future but rarely the present. Even the majority of the novel is her perception of the past, and in the beginning there's that whole thing about keeping memories locked up in bottles. Plus, the Gothic genre is all about the past coming back to haunt the present, as is the entire premise of this story. She imagines what the past is like and creates entire scenarios based off her own feelings to the point where it entirely controls her present actions until it's suffocating.
