What a nuisance of a man. The State is not nor will it ever be subservient to the Church. Henry II ended up twice as powerful after Becket’s murder, even with the fallout. A martyr to religious liberty? Please, the man was nothing of the sort. He was a martyr to his own intransigence and the overweening reach of the Church itself in matters of sovereignty. As always, the State won. Good riddance.
