Classic Spongebob actually had self respect, values and limits. He wouldn't necessarily let people walk all over him like the modern Spongebob tends to do. He's more annoyed at other people's shenanigans, physically weak and more focused on creating new things, even if it had something to do with overcomplicating things. Old squidward, obviously not liking his new idea and seeing it as "dumb", wanting to do it the old way, ended up failing until he tried Spongebobs idea.
