LOR spoilers Can someone explain the current consensus for this guy? Dead page be damned. How is his motivation for hiding his face or adopting his wife's outlook on life resembling enneagram 8 at all? 8’s are driven by vengeance. When they’re not a stereotypical bigot in media, they’re leaders that symbolize some form of ‘justice’, standing up against a system/group & defending themselves. Myo, Kali & Elena resemble 8s more than Roland, even if they may or may not be e8. (1) Kali - used the money she got from her jobs to financially support her neighbors. She is irritated when she meets Carmen because this is a girl of ‘privilege’ trying to sympathize w/ the denizens. It’s pretentious @ first glance. She eventually joins Carmen’s group bc of its intention to help people. (2) Elena - decided that there was no point trying to conform bc she will get ostracized as a bloodfiend no matter what. While she doesn’t represent bloodfiends as a whole, she represents the frustration of being controlled by society & justifies her rebellion in the way bloodfiends usually operate (controlled, held back) by saying: “here's no real justification for your kind to condemn us.” (3) Myo is another character who is ruthless to defend herself and survive. This comment is about Roland though, so I won't explore more her. We just have to understand these characters SURVIVE TO LIVE. Their motivations are active protection of self (and others, especially in Kali's case) AGAINST the world. However, Roland LIVES TO SURVIVE. His motivations are to protect himself FROM the world. “All I did was strike at them with my sword so I could live.” “The mask became the enclosed world I couldn't leave. I couldn’t stand to be open with a clear conscience in the city”. Vengeance does come in the form of chasing the cause of his wife’s death, but this plan is underdeveloped. It hones in on a specific event & person rather than a collective injustice or someone abusing their control. It’s a major flaw in Roland’s plan, bc he had nothing else to really live for after it. We’ve seen how Roland reacts in the smoke war. He is plagued w/ guilt he can barely recall the source of bc of the memory loss. Roland initially keeps the mask bc it was what his Gran advised him to do. The reluctance to take it off is amplified as it meant having to confront the horrors of the city, & how his and other people’s convenience is provided at the expense of others. It is also bc of the mask that Roland could easily close himself off from ppl. He had never built a proper bond w others until Angelica, and even when they first met, he avoided talking about himself. This resigning from ppl varies from Elena's avarice, & Kali's reaching out to those who share her sentiments. Roland is static, despite being constantly on the move to survive. He feared vulnerability with others. Despite his easygoing personality, he maintains distance. 8s may do this with suspicion of being exploited, but in Roland's it is fear of it. The difference bw these may not be clear, so I will try to explain When I say suspicion of being exploited, the aggressiveness of an 8 is there. ex: Argalia talking to Iori & asking why she did x y and z. Meanwhile, fear of being exploited is passive. It exists prior to any hints of it. It delves more into running from something instead of facing it head on. But to run away means there's a chance to run back. The uncertainty with fear leaves more options open, like how Roland saw Angelica open up to him, and he in turn opened up to her, or how Roland tried to give Angela a chance by watching her character develop. Compare this to Kali, who confronts C & is ready to fight her before C challenges her perspective on things. She is open minded here, but her mistrust & immediate action to counter C's preaching is more alike e8. 9s tend to merge, & Roland merges blatantly. From his blending in w/ the city, to the way he copes w/ the horrors by taking his gran’s advise & clinging onto Angelica’s motto in life. Angela repeatedly questions his lack of emotionality when battling people he once knew, and he always provides a reason that dismisses potential grievances. “You just lost your friend, are you feeling OK?” → “...That’s that and this is this.” This saying embodies e9 narcotization & oversimplification of life. There is no point in wanting or hoping for more. Things are the way they are and he cannot change it, so the only way to deal with it is suck it up. Chesed even asks him "Are you indifferent about it? Or are you actually trying to turn away from the underlying unfairness of it all?" More on this^ Roland once told Binah: “I dont care if I turn into a monster or whatever at this point. I don't think it matters anymore. I just accepted that there's nothing I can do about it and gave up." Context: Binah brings up the idea of him becoming an abnormality. For comparison, look at Elena. She accepts the label of a monster, takes the next step & discards (1/2)
