For IXTJ voters: He's actually so good at emotionally manipulating her without even realizing it, that her wife actually sacrificed everything to him, to his own carrer and his two families (blood and theater). Then, when she finally realized what had actually happened with her whole life, she got into typical CP 6w7 switch from good-dog to bad-dog behavior, and he couldn't understand a word of what she was barking, because she has never really opposed him until this moment. He really didn't get it, he wasn't faking his lack of understanding. He has thought all along that he was doing everything for them both. With this typical XNFJ Pygmalion Syndrome of wanting to make their loved one the very best version of themselves, totally forgetting that HIS vision of her potential as a great NYC comedian was NOT what SHE wanted at all. She wanted to be a Hollywood actress, and she lost it all by love for him and hope for later, because she had believed him when he had said that one day they might go back to LA. Since he didn't actually wanted this, obsessed by his own master-creater career, Ni tunnel vision, and his love for what HE thought she was, he couldn't get why and what she was so upset about… and so he kept feeling like the good guy almost all the way to the courtroom. That's strong Fe. As an INTJ, I was kind of siding with him for the whole movie (not totally, of course), because he seemed so calm and rational and innocent, and her wife was so crazy sometimes and bitter and stupid (the whole contracting lawyers mistake)… until my own wife actually explained all this to me, and I got it. And it's funny because, by lack of Fe (but strong Te), I'm always asking my ESFP wife about everything, checking if her own Fi aligns with mine, trying to find a rational common ground without EVER manipulating her. (With loads of INTJ mistakes, though.) But this guy's whole psychology and behavior is exactly like my INFJ-4w5 friend's, probably even stronger in terms of emotional manipulation because of his type 1, which is kind of "morally objective" when associated with Fe: Let's do together the only possible right/good thing. And if you're a self-doubting and external-guidance-relying typical 6w7 like his wife, no wonder you got life-raped without a culprit. He may even have fallen madly in love with her precisely for this reason in the first place, like an unconscious guru falling for his most cherished little dependent thing. Or a genius playwright for his fetish actress. Not good, Charlie. Not good.
