Keep in mind that Virgil from the Divine Comedy is very different from the actual poet Virgil. In the Divine Comedy, he stands as the Archetype of (human) Reason guiding Dante from Hell to the top of Purgatory then leaving him in the hands of Beatrix, the Archetype of Love, which will guide him through Heaven. It's a symbolic process and Dante nailed it perfectly.
