to the people saying 1w9; i think you guys are overestimating his ideals when aligned to themes like moral principles or integrity. his conflicts with nana aren’t purely based on a “who is right/who is wrong” need, out seeking for revenge based on his moral compass. i also don’t agree that his chase for justice, salvation, etc is based on moral principles; rather, he has an underlying motivation. mainly because he is traumatized and trauma usually let us see where on a spectrum a person develops when it comes to how they normally are vs how they’re like in chronic stress/short-term stress. spoilers for the manga ahead: he’s definitely somewhere in the anxious triad and reminds me of a healthy 3 at level 1 (his normal personality at the beginning of the manga) who devolved into an unhealthy 3 at level 9 at his worst (during fight with nana) “Level 1: Self-accepting, inner-directed, and authentic, everything they seem to be. Modest and charitable, self-deprecatory humor and a fullness of heart emerge. Gentle and benevolent.” “Level 9: Become vindictive, attempting to ruin others’ happiness. Relentless, obsessive about destroying whatever reminds them of their own shortcomings and failures. Psychopathic behavior. Generally corresponds to the Narcissistic Personality Disorder.” he was always motivated by a need to appeal and appear to others that he was righteous (not necessarily always in the right, just righteous) even when he was younger. at least, that’s what he defaults to, and it’s much much clearer when you get to recent manga chapters and see him in situations where his life is threatened because others believed him to be guilty where this motivation really came from (survival) some really good examples is him thinking first that nana had a reason to do what she did to him since she didn’t look like she was crazy, just that it looked like there was something wrong that he might have done (which he doesn’t say outright, but judging by his reaction to the kid’s lunchbox when he was younger and opting to lie to his father about giving it rather than actually giving it, he’s always concerned about a perceived relapse in judgement). -> part of his need to please others came from this, but by the end of the first episode, he comes to the resolution that he doesn’t care about being a leader anymore (doesn’t care about doing things just because it’s right, he’ll just do what he wants). based on what he thought of himself from the past, i think nanao was trying to come to the conclusion that he didn’t live up to nana’s expectations of being or wanting to be a leader which is why she threw him over the cliff. this isn’t too far of a stretch considering nanao’s already used to thinking that perceived relapses in judgement deserve physical abuse (his dad). and when nanao’s own judgement comes into question (when nana talks about nanao’s mixed feelings on his relationship with his father), nanao is quick to get angry in defense for himself. not saying it’s wrong, just saying that the way he was raised, to him, makes moral sense a moniker on whether he deserves kindness/love/respect or not (as well as strength, intelligence, etc since he was considered the talentless one in his family and he can’t even do this? be a good person? he was always in survival mode and his initial need to find a role for himself through being a leader sums up that + his motivation to be morally correct. and then he gets over the insecurity briefly; the fact he denounced it seems like he’s supposed to be a 3 motivated by validation over a 1 motivated by morality. not saying he’s not moral, just saying that it’s not a motivation for him. (getting thrown over a cliff resetted that development tho sobs) it’s mainly bcuz of this that his E3 is really clear. level 1 gives that anxious, self deprecating personality we see from him, but it also results in him showing his motivations through productive means - ie researching all about enemies of humanity to be prepared (to show that he does belong there and isn’t worthless…) and showing his resolve by stopping the fireball - again not because he has a moral obligation to, which he clarifies when he says he’s not interested in being a leader, but because he wants to (getting over his previous insecurities that it means he’s unworthy of love).
