Though like the rest of the young women in the Magnae Forces, she isn’t a soldier, Quinn is the best scavenger the force has to offer. She often finds herself traversing through rough wastelands and dangerous collection centres to gather the resources needed for the soldiers’ weaponry. At one point in the book, due to her fear of the orphanage she grew up in being destroyed, Quinn throws herself into a battle to speed up the war effort. A bad decision that almost costs her a foot. Belligerent Sexual Tension: She has this dynamic with Hugo from the beginning of the book. Despite the fact that on the outside, the two recruits dislike each other and are constantly at each other's throats, their inner thoughts portrayed in their POV chapters showed they both harbour a hidden attraction to each other behind all the vitriol and snark. It’s no surprise that their first genuine conversation with each other in the book leads to the blossoming of their true desire for each other. The Determinator: Is described in the introductory chapter as not being as talented as the other recruits in the top ten, forcing her to win through intense determination, hence her recruit nickname “Queen Triumph”. She is fueled to be as good a recruit as possible, as the higher her rank, the more money she can send back to Iqra House Orphanage, which took her in as a young girl. This serves her well most of the time, but there are times in the story where she overworks or injures herself due to this attitude. Heroic Self-Deprecation: One of Quinn’s defining characteristics throughout the story is her tendency to beat herself up for not being a good enough recruit. Her nickname was given to her because of her intense work ethic, which she uses to compensate for her self-perceived inadequacies when it comes to helping the war effort and her people. Hot-Blooded: Is passionate about her scavenger work and providing for the kids at her former orphanage. She’s also easily aggravated by others underestimating her or insulting her skills, such as when Foreseer III cuts her pay and Hugo mocks her for not being on the top five recruits list. It seems that Hugo is the character who draws out her passionate side. Early on in the book, she gets into multiple heated arguments with him over her rank, his taking of performance-enhancing soldier substances, and disagreements over general wartime routines. As the story draws on, this hot-blooded rivalry reveals deep, concealed feelings the pair had for one another and could no longer deny, ending up in a loving relationship. Ironic Echo: In Chapter 22, Quinn was taking care of Hugo, who was in a coma at the time. Whilst she is caring for him during every second of the day, she can’t help but laugh at the irony of the situation. They had spent most of their time knowing each other, fighting, bickering, and denying their obvious feelings for each other, yet when they finally decided to embrace their feelings and get into a relationship, the meteorite attack from the sky put Hugo in a coma, threatening to kill him and take him away from her. Not So Stoic: In multiple scenes during the book, Quinn attempts to maintain her tough exterior in the face of an emotional or traumatic situation, trying her damndest to stifle tears. Half of the time, she fails to do so, giving in to the tears that would naturally come in these situations. Tsundere: Quinn expresses herself as quick-tempered, no-nonsense, and harsh. But at her core, she is a very maternal and soft-hearted person who wants above all to protect and care for those around her. Later on in the book, this inner warmth shows itself on the outside far more often than the outer coarseness. She starts the book as a hot-blooded, endlessly frustrated recruit desperate to make more money for her old home and ends the book happily married to Hugo and a mother of five in the epilogue, who owns a building that takes in orphaned children.
