Biografie
Elisabeth of France, or Elisabeth of Valois (Spanish: Isabel de Valois; French: Élisabeth de Valois) (2 April 1546 – 3 October 1568), was Queen of Spain as the third wife of Philip II of Spain. She was the eldest daughter of Henry II of France and Catherine de' Medici. Elisabeth married Philip II of Spain in 1559. Philip was completely enchanted by his young bride. Despite the significant age difference, Elisabeth was also quite pleased with her husband. Elisabeth had been betrothed to Philip's son, Don Carlos, but political complications unexpectedly necessitated a marriage to Philip. When Philip locked Carlos away, thus led to the Prince's death, Elisabeth cried for days. She later gave birth to Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia, and then to Catalina Micaela. Elisabeth suffered miscarriage on 3 October 1568 and died the same day along with her newborn daughter. Elisabeth is a central character in Schiller's play Don Carlos and in Verdi's opera adapted from Schiller's play.
