Tilted Political Compass

The tilted political compass is a reconstruction of the political landscape using two new dimensions at 45-degree angles from the traditional political compass. The first dimension contrasts "cognitive decoupling," creating a spectrum between decoupled and coupled visions of an ideal society. In a decoupled society, people are separate by default, with obligations formally defined and interactions based on transactions. In a coupled society, people are connected by default, with open-ended obligations modeled on personal relationships. The second dimension is taken from A Thrive-Survive Theory of the Political Spectrum. The "thrive" end represents values for safe, rich societies where generosity and self-actualization are possible. The "survive" end represents values for precarious situations where productivity, order, and discipline are prioritized. The combination of "coupled" and "thrive" produces the left, while "decoupled" and "survive" produces the right.
