Ah the typical Asian tiger parent. They’re almost always either unhealthy 3s or 1s, and xSTJ. Low Fi (and zero Fe) is their defining characteristic. I don’t think Amy has 1 in her tritype; I do believe she has 8. This is mainly because she believed her explosive style of parenting would build ‘resilience’ in her daughters and she had a very ‘my way or the highway’ philosophy. 1s tend to be a lot more balanced, self-restrained, and focused on their kids meeting objective standards, rather than being tough or resilient. I’ll give credit where it’s due though bc Amy said herself that she didn’t want people to see her parenting as admirable but rather an honest self-reflection about why it’s not the best way to go about parenting. To me that shows developing inferior Fi. And tbh her being able to reflect later is worth recognizing, considering so many Asian parents (Indian parents especially) will say that they did everything “perfectly” and won’t see any room for improvement or self-reflection.

Duff Jr. Professor of Law at Yale Law School. Her expertise is in international business transactions, law and development, ethnic conflict, and globalization and the law.
