Pasting this from replies but here is my argument for Yotasuke being a 5 The best place to see proof of Yotasuke being a 5 is in his interactions with his mother, and later with other people and animals. “In childhood, Fives felt ambivalent towards both their parental figures. They were never quite sure what their place was and where they belonged. Essentially, they felt like “odd ducks,” forever on the outside looking in rather than nurtured and accepted as one of the group. Sometimes there were obvious reasons for this: Parents may have been alcoholic, abusive, or played favorites… But whatever the case, Fives felt like little they could do was wanted or needed by their family.” Yotasuke’s mother encouraged him to draw as a child, but she was ignorant of how he felt about art and whether he really enjoyed it. She only sees it as a way for him to be successful, and places high standards on him and communicates to Yotasuke that it is all he is worth (“That’s good, but I think I like the previous one better.”) ("The only thing you can do is draw. So I thought I could at least let you decorate the entrance. Do you understand my kindness? No, you don't!") That’s why Yotasuke resorts to making art that is perceived as good instead of making art that he wants to make, because he felt like he could never meet her expectations. “To cope with this feeling of “otherness,” Fives retreated from the outside world and from their families. They often hid away in their rooms, looking for a subject they could master or an area of expertise that would allow them to find their place in their families or in society. This area of expertise needed to be something unique to themselves.” This is why Yotasuke is upset when he asks Yatora why someone like him would be an artist. In Chapter 8 he says, “Why are you trying to step into this side when you already have everything? You don’t even need to choose art.” Yotasuke believes that he has nothing else to prove his worth in society besides his art, compared to someone like Yatora who performs well in all academic subjects and could be anything else. “They resent intrusions and demands on their time. Close physical affection can feel overwhelming and bothersome to them. They feel that they need as much time as possible to themselves to devote to mastering their subjects of interest. They learn to distance themselves from their emotions and identify themselves as their thoughts.” Yotasuke’s avoidance of other people is not because he is trying to prove that he is different or unique to justify his worth. He avoids people because they drain him (his mother, Nekoyashiki), which is why he seeks comfort in animals; they don’t have any expectations of him. A good example is when he says this in Chapter 39: "Why does everyone meddle with me? They don't even try to understand how I am, only looking at the surface. While wanting to control me by saying assertive things." Yotasuke does care to be understood as he expresses here, but that's not all he wants; he mainly just wants to be left alone, because he dislikes when people meddle with and try to control him. "When they [E4s] retreat, it may be because the social situation makes them uncomfortable, but they likely hope that someone will notice and come after them... Unlike 4’s, when they [E5s] retreat, they don’t want to be chased down. They believe their safety and security comes from disconnecting and being alone." Most importantly, Yotasuke blatantly represses his individuality. This is his weakspot, as shown by Nekoyashiki’s constant prodding (“But you see, we already know you’re good, so use your head. This isn’t what we want from you. Like I said, we didn’t accept you for your drawing.”) He draws because he is good at it, not because he enjoys it. He is distancing himself from his emotions and identifies himself based on his skill as an artist (“It’s a fact that my art is good.”) As for his 1 fix, I found an exchange between himself and Yatora from Chapter 36 that shows it pretty clearly: Yotasuke: It’s because I’ve always been working on it [the project] Yatora: Nah nah nah, I’ve been working on it too and I had- Yotasuke. No, you haven’t, right? If you don’t think you’re good, you should move your hands instead of playing around. That’s the only thing I’ve been doing.
