I was torn on his MBTI for a minute there, but you know what? Textbook ESTJ. And great proof that ESTJs aren't inherently stuffy, and can be real goofballs. The only reason I even questioned the consensus was due to a bias that an ESTJ couldn't be as much of a showman or a performer or a ham (as he was in the early years, anyway), and other people must agree because I see ESFP votes down below. But no, that tertiary Ne can really show up in fun ways sometimes. ESTJs can really work a room, and that's what Bob Hope made a career out of doing. I don't need to explain why ESTJ fits so well when it's the consensus, but he really is a great example of one - especially in his later years. The functions fit perfectly. I think the Te-Si and inferior Fi are decidedly evidenced in his unwavering dedication to those USO performances, his America-centric values (xSTJs can so easily become slaves to patriotism), the determination with which he pursued a career and the tirelessness with which he maintained one. Once he made it big, he was known for sticking to cue cards and always keeping an army of joke writers in his back pocket, which... yeah, only an ESTJ comic would turn comedy into a corporation. I guess I could also see ESTP for him, especially considering the womanizing he was known for, and there's definitely some Ti in some of his ad-libs. But the Te just seems too strong. As for my 7w6 vote - I guess this argument isn't super solid, but I just don't see a lot of w8 in him. But I see w6 in the politics, in him being married to a woman for seventy years and sleeping around a lot but wanting the same one to go back home to, in him adopting several children, in all his Hollywood connections and his real estate investments and even the golfing, in the nervous energy he brings to his earlier performances. Hell, it's even in the smug coward image. I've read, according to his writers, the Bob Hope character wasn't unlike the real guy, just a bit exaggerated. Some of his characters definitely feel like core 6s. I just get the feeling he was a confident and self-assured 7w6, rather than 7w8. I think an ESTJ 7w8 would be more of a hard-***, too, not as personable or performance-oriented. A final thought - I recently read a pretentious but well-written look into Bob Hope's legacy. The writer of the article was a huge Marx Brothers fan (as am I) and essentially deemed Hope an antithesis of the Marxes, particularly Groucho (despite the two being friends in real life, though Hope seemed to get on with just about every comedian. Inarguably a self-preservational 7 - that man knew and seemed to get along with absolutely everyone.) The writer mentioned growing up in the 70s and how a lot of younger people were discovering and enjoying old comedy, and the Marxes were sort of like folk heroes because they were anti-war and antiestablishment and anarchistic, and this was of course just after the Vietnam War. Hope, on the other hand, was fairly close to the opposite. All patriotism, Republicanism, and Americana. Arguably, of all the ways celebrities interacted with the war, trying to cheer up the young 'brave' draftees through entertainment was one of the more honorable things you could do. But there's a lot to be said about Hope's association with the army and with America as a whole, and what that entails. And as we grow more and more disenchanted with America, it's easy to become disenchanted with an all-American comedian, too. Point is, I do think Groucho's anti-everything ENTP humor contrasts very, very neatly with how Hope's ESTJ values played into his relationship with his own comedy work. Both are wise guys, both are cynical - but one satirizes and mocks, and one exploits. One steps back to laugh at it all, the other slings an arm around the audience and pretends like it's laughing with them. You get it, don't you?

With a career that spanned nearly 80 years, Hope appeared in more than 70 short and feature films, with 54 feature films with Hope as star, including a series of seven "Road" musical comedy movies with Bing Crosby as Hope's top-billed partner. In addition to hosting the Academy Awards show 19 times, more than any other host, he appeared in many stage productions and television roles, and was the author of 14 books.
