Posted this on the other page too; feel free to remove if needed. (Probably should have just posted here, since this is the novel page). This analysis is going to mix Margarita and Eve together, since they’re technically the same person and seem to function in the same way, but I’ll be focusing on Margarita here. When I first read Gift From the Princess Who Brought Sleep (the novel), I was struck by this particular quote from Margarita’s diary: “I’ll make my way North. That’s my intuition. I’m famous for my intuition often being right. In my head I’m famous for it” (Chapter E). (This is, incidentally, one of the only times she comments on her own personality—Fe user, not geared towards her own emotions. She’s best at seeing her most prominent trait is all.) Now, she admits that it’s only in her head that her intuition’s well-respected, but I think that her single-minded ideal of living happily with Kaspar was a sign of prominent Ni. Outside her inner monologues, she’s also great at making connections between seemingly disparate things. She later says to Elluka, “You’ve been alive for several centuries now. Haven’t you ever thought it was painful? Haven’t you ever thought that you were tired of it all? –It’s alright. That’s just the way humans are. I can’t sleep. I can’t sleep today either. I want to become human. I want to be able to sleep like a normal human being. You want that too, don’t you? Then--let’s drink it together.” (Chapter 6, Scene 6). This is in a monologue about how she’s remembered that Elluka’s also an immortal sorceress—she linearly jumps from the topic of Elluka to an insight about humans (however poisoned) to some end conclusion. To pair with Ni, I think I see Se over Si in her attempts to constantly live her ideal of a happy life over and over again. She’s always striving for her goal without ever putting stock into what’s happened to her in the past. It might benefit her, every time she reawakens, to subjectivize her sensory impressions and try to reflect on her memories (Si), then brainstorm some other way to live (Ne)—but no, she just passes over them as objective fact and keeps going for her goal. And her tunnel vision is incredible, as Elluka notes: “And she would pursue the looks of her beloved, Adam, which would sometimes repeat in other people. It was a warped manner of doing things inconceivable to the average person” (Chapter 7, Scene 3). I think her Fe is quite evident in her lack of confidence in whether she’s happy or not. She’s not terribly concerned with any personal moral framework (Fi), and she has this to say about her marriage to Kaspar: “That became a reality, and I became his wife. Margarita Felix became Margarita Blankenheim. And I became happy. Yes, surely, maybe, I must have. But it seemed like that wasn’t the case for him” (Chapter B). She’s incredibly detached from her own emotions—she’s describing them with objectivity, and reasoning through them instead of accepting them by themselves (Fe + Ti), to say nothing of her immediately moving onto Kaspar’s feelings. And when Elluka objects to her poisoning everyone, she interprets her Gift as a present for everyone: “Why? I don’t need to make any antidote. Because everyone—everyone is happy. Inside sleep, everyone forgets the pains and troubles of living. Unpleasant reality, unrequited feelings. Inside a dream, everyone can forget them. That’s why I made it […] I am—yes, I am the Sleep Princess. The one who will make everyone sleep. The woman who will become everyone’s hope. The woman who sought out h—” (Chapter 6, Scene 6). And about her tertiary Ti: I think it’s quite pronounced, actually. (I’ve been pleasantly surprised by some Margarita fanfiction—these aren’t really MBTI/Jung people as far as I know, but this nuance of her character’s quite important.) It’s actually sprinkled in with the Fe quotes I put above, like her response to Elluka saying she should make an antidote. Her subjective logic says that people are happy when they’re asleep, and so she shall make them sleep (Ti supporting Fe). It’s not any sort of consensus-based logic at all—it’s something that serves her purpose by making sense to her. Compared to the likes of Irina, a Te-dom also looking to achieve some sort of goal (though it’s a little more concrete… well, that’s Te as well), Eve’s also not systematic about it at all. She just rationalizes the things around her and stays passive (Ti). Now for the order of her functions. I’m not terribly confident about recognizing inferior Se, but I think that Margarita’s Ni is definitely stronger than her Se. In addition, her Fe ranks above her Ti in her stack. So she can either be INFJ or ENFJ. I think she’s INFJ because her Fe is mostly used in support of her Ni vision, as you can see from her sleep princess manifesto. And Ti seems to fit as a tertiary function, because she’s constantly rationalizing with it. She doesn’t struggle with it like it’s inferior. So that’s why I’m voting INFJ.
