In my opinion he is an ENTP 6w5 despite having some ISTP-like characteristics (almost like an ENTP/ISTP hybrid). He definitely uses Ne-Ti (usually in an unhealthy manner) and has very low Fi, but clearly shows Fe, even when it’s misdirected. His Si seems to be lower than his Se, which makes him harder to type. Additionally, he’s shown to have higher Ni than a typical ENTP. Dale is definitely so blind and either sp/sx or sx/sp (despite being seemingly asexual). He definitely seems very high in sp but also seems like he could likely a be counter phobic 6, so it’s hard to tell in his case. Both seem like they could be accurately be used to describe him in my opinion, so I am open to multiple interpretations. He’s my favorite character, tied with Kahn. If Dale were a real person he would likely meet the criterial for Schizotypal Personality Disorder: According to the DSM-5 you must meet at least 5 characteristics for a diagnosis, or which Dale could be described as having: 1. Incorrect interpretation of events, such as a feeling that something that is actually harmless or inoffensive has a direct personal meaning 2. Peculiar, eccentric or unusual thinking, beliefs or mannerisms 3.Suspicious or paranoid thoughts and constant doubts about the loyalty of others 4.Belief in special powers, such as mental telepathy or superstitions 5. Peculiar style of speech, such as vague or unusual patterns of speaking, or rambling oddly during conversations As well as clearly having Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD), of which he meets at least 7 or the 5 required diagnostic criteria: 1. Doubt the commitment, loyalty or trustworthiness of others, believing others are exploiting or deceiving them. 2. Be reluctant to confide in others or reveal personal information because they’re afraid the information will be used against them. 3. Be unforgiving and hold grudges. 4. Read hidden meanings in the innocent remarks or casual looks of others. 5. Perceive attacks on their character that aren’t apparent to others 6. Not see their role in problems or conflicts, believing they’re always right 7. Be hostile, stubborn and argumentative. Ironically, one symptom of PPD that is clearly subverted in Dale is: 8. Have persistent suspicions, without justified reason, that their spouses or romantic partners are being unfaithful. (Dale can’t conceive of the idea that Nancy is cheating on him with John Redcorn, despite clear evidence) I have a theory that many of the major characters in King of the Hill suffer from a mental illness or personality disorder, with Hank having Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD), Bill having Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) as well as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and Peggy having Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). Kahn also canonically has Bipolar Disorder (with a surprisingly accurately portrayal, nonetheless!) These personality disorders would definitely make him more difficult to type accurately. But then again, I’m just another uncertified Armchair Psychologist on PDB.
