i've compiled all of my arguments for 5w4 as well as a 1 tritype fix so they can be found more easily: i don't think carelessness methods to secure his needs guarantee shin being a 7 core; i've always thought of his recklessness as 5 disintegrating into 7. also, i see him as a 5 due to his desire to understand the environment he is in. i know it's such a simple explanation, but he's always asking those around him questions. i wish i could name a certain chapter, but i remember him asking reira and then, many chapters later, yasu about what they thought bonds between people were. he does often take in information, specifically about the people around him. he aims for understanding. that's why he is able to grasp certain situations more objectively and with a greater understanding than other, older characters. he is (most often) impartial and objective. i think he tries to figure things out as a way to sort of defend himself. he does avoid emotional pain, but he doesn't exactly do this by looking for something more positive. the 7-like qualities he has are immature(?) and the way they manifest seems more like a 5 moving in the direction of disintegration. i'm going to link a personality cafe thread on sp5, which i think fits him just as well as sp7. https://www.personalitycafe.com/threads/instinctual-subtypes.131202/ i can recall a number of times he withdraws from others. specifically, in chapter 73 in the manga, the first thing he does upon arriving to the dorms is retreat into his room. (i'll avoid giving any spoilers, but this is a significant moment! definitely recommend looking at it) also, a component of his character that often gets ignored are feelings of guilt and inadequacy within blast. he wants to be competent, putting the money he has into an acoustic guitar. 5s hate being thought of as incapable, and i think this is true for shin. when he and nana fight (i'll link a clip), the digs she makes at him target his sense of independence and competency. this gets him to fight back, because these two things are important to him. he doesn't want to be seen as depending on others and looks down on nana for accepting gifts from ren and mai: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT-f-nIAgP8 he's a w4 over a w6 as he gravitates more towards personal areas of knowledge. also, surprisingly, 5w6 are often less sociable than 5w4s. furthermore, i feel it's important to make a distinction between disengaging and withdrawing. it's possible to be withdrawn while engaged with your own knowledge, if that makes sense. it's not always withdrawing physically; one can be surrounded by people while completely emotionally detached. i feel like this is very often the case for shin. it's not like he doesn't care to understand people or engage with them; it's a different sort of detachment. he wants to understand others but on his own. as for shin's 1 fix, i'd like to offer that 1s can behave immorally, but they will almost always try to find a way to justify it. shin does this with his whole "it's my job" thing. he tries to make his own exploitation seem like something responsible and even "good." enneagram and tritype aren't about behavior. they're about desires, fears, and coping strategies. more than any other gut type, shin exhibits that of 1. it seems like he's in a very 1-ish cycle of disappointment with himself and those around him. he spends a lot of time trying to gather information to determine what is right by asking others and himself. interestingly, every confrontation shin has with nana or reira involves him giving a critique of their inability to weigh things objectively without their own selfishness/emotion involved. shin's approach to conflict shows he's a 1. he definitely represses his anger, and, after a confrontation, he's quick to back down. this is not 8-ish at all. it's much more like a 9 or 1. he's not a 9, because he doesn't shy away from confrontation in hopes of maintaining harmony like a 9 would. his harsh-yet-fair criticisms of other characters are the best way to show the bit of 1-ness that he does have. when he does speak up about a situation, shin's quick to point out who is at fault, who's in the wrong. he he takes a clear stance and critiques them, saying they're in the wrong. at the same time, this is something he struggles with. rationalizing his strong emotions, balancing heart and head -- he tries to do these things (and sometimes fails.) sometimes self-destruction goes hand-in-hand with any variation of the 514/541 tritype because of the self-imposed high expectations that come with it. his disregard for morals in moments of self-destruction aren't because he doesn't value them. it's because he does value morals deep down that everything he does without regard for them is self-destructive. if anyone has specific questions, let me know!
