Biographie
Jurate is the Sea Mother of the Baltic Sea. Balt sailors and fishermen revere the goddess, and seafaring Slavs, Finns, and Scandinavians pray for her blessing. She appears as a beautiful mermaid and lives in an amber palace at the bottom of the sea. The amber deposits found along the Baltic coast are said to be her tears, shed for the loss of a mortal lover exiled or killed by Perun for breaking the boundary between the mortal and immortal. She depends on her enchantments to defend herself, but if a weapon is needed, she chooses a dagger. A perfectly shaped piece of amber is her symbol.
