Biographie

Willem V, calling himself Willem Batavus (The Hague, March 8, 1748 - Brunswick, April 9, 1806), Prince of Orange, Prince of Orange-Nassau, was the last governor of the Republic of the United Netherlands (1751-1795). Willem V is said to have a very good memory, philosophical in nature and good in character, but also indecisive, legalistic and detailed. He was unwilling to reform the oligarchic system of government and came under increasing scrutiny as a result. During patriotism, he became deeply troubled by his obstinacy. He lost several functions and retired to Nijmegen. He returned to The Hague in September 1787, thanks to the support of a Prussian army. In February 1793, the revolutionary regime in Paris declared war on him. In January 1795 he went into exile in London, after which the Batavian Republic was proclaimed. Willem ordered the colonial administrators in the East Indies to surrender to the British. In 1801 he relinquished all his rights as a stadtholder.
